Who Do You Think You Aren’t?

By: Edward Ball

I always get a kick when people see me dressed up in something like a sports coat, bow tie, vest, and a pair of dress shoes and they give me that “who do you think you are” look. I am sure at some point in your life you were either asked or asked someone “who do you think you are?”

“Who do you think you are?” is a strange question. I believe it comes from a place of hate. When we see someone looking or behaving in a manner that goes above and beyond what we think of them, their job title, and how we think they think of themselves, we have the nerve to ask “who do you think you are?” Instead we should be asking if there is anything we can do to help that person realize their goal.

I am going to fake it ‘til I make it, that is, I am going to act like a CEO, look like a million bucks and talk like a professional speaker until I am one and I have one.

An even more powerful question we should be asking is “who do you think you aren’t?” All of us have hopes, dreams, capabilities, and competencies that far exceed what and where we are and what we are currently doing in life. We aren’t living up to our potential because of who we think we aren’t.

We think we aren’t capable of being a CEO, making a million bucks, being an author, being a professional public speaker, being in the NBA etc.

After you ask the question “who do you think you aren’t?” and you receive the answer help that person you asked, even if you asked yourself, to start believing that they can become who they think they aren’t and eventually be better than that person!
