Be Careful What You Ask For

Be careful what you ask for because you just might get it. I believe I got just what I asked for about seven-teen years ago.

I remember sitting in a county jail facing a hundred plus years and praying to God and asking the universe to get me out of the trouble that I was facing. I promised them both that if my prayer or call was answered I would change, I will be a good person, I wouldn’t do this, I would do that. I know you can relate if you have ever been drunk. I am talking about being so drunk that the room is spinning uncontrollably causing you to hug the toilet and swear on your first born to never drink again if you get through your drunken nightmare alive. Come next weekend you have forgotten all the promises you made and you turn up again.

Funny thing is everyone knew your promises were lies. God and the universe knew I would need more than simply getting out of the trouble I was facing in order to change; I would need to be immersed in the consequences of my actions and that immersion would be the catalyst for my change.

I got just what I asked for: instead of one hundred plus years, I ended up with the equivalent of thirty-nine years in prison.  Thirty-nine years is what it took for me to come close to beginning to keep my promises.

Now I am careful what I ask for. I realize that it is very possible my prayers would be answered. Answered prayers come with strings, obligations, and even consequences.

My advice, if you ask for it be prepared to receive it. If you aren’t prepared don’t bother asking.

  1. This message is for Edward Ball. I am actually inquiring about your book…39 Things… Since there are no reviews, can you please give me a few examples of the lessons in this book, perhaps four or so. I would like to send it to my son who is currently in jail but not sure if it’d be a good fit or not.

    Thank you!
